of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives
When we experience a terrible event (or are exposed to ongoing, distressing circumstances) that threatens our safety, the impact on our brains and bodies can be long-lasting. Emotional regulation can become difficult. Key areas of our brain (the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus) that help us regulate, moderate stress responses, and interpret threats in our environment, become impaired by trauma. This can leave us experiencing hypervigilance, chronic stress, depression, and more frequent and intense problems in our interpersonal relationships. You may even experience physical symptoms, such as muscle aches and headaches. The effects of trauma can detrimentally affect the functioning of our lives, as our relationships, careers, and personal goals can suffer as we struggle to cope. Therapy can help.
Trauma resilience starts with connection. As an individualized process, healing from trauma looks different for everyone. In the safe context of our therapeutic alliance, I will support you in processing distressing experiences, developing healthier stress coping skills, and identifying your personal strengths and talents. When clients engage in therapy for trauma, they often find that they develop better communication skills, find it easier to say no and set healthy boundaries, and have more connected relationships.
Bessel van der Kolk
When hyperarousal and hyperreactivity become chronic stress responses, we suffer greatly. Increasing our somatic, or body-centered, awareness of where trauma becomes stored in our body can bring us physical and emotional relief.
Experiencing trauma can lead us to expect danger, potential harm, and/or betrayal in our relationships. When we begin to process our trauma, we can challenge the relational patterns that we may have developed in response to a traumatic event.
As we develop increased self-awareness of our emotional experiences, we can shift from reacting to coping. Together, we can identify coping skills for you to practice that can help you feel less overwhelmed and more in control.
You are worthy of healing. Together, we can help you find relief, self-compassion, and a pathway to the positive change you want to see in your life.
